The Rand’s studies showed that those who participated in postsecondary education programs in prison had a recidivism rate that was more than 50 percent lower than those who did not participate in such correctional education programs. And that correctional educational programs are cost-effective: Every dollar invested in prison education reduced incarceration costs by $4 to $5.

the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found that higher education reduced recidivism to:

13.7% incarcerated individuals who earned an associate degree
5.6% incarcerated individuals earned a bachelor’s degree
1% incarcerated individuals earned a master’s degree
